World Environment Day: Kogi State Government Reiterates Commitment to Protect Bio-diversity
Kogi State government has reiterated its commitment to the protection of the
environment against plant and animal extinction.
Commissioner of Environment,
Chief Victor Omofaiye stated this while speaking at the occasion of this year's
World Environment Day celebration tagged: Celebrate Diversity, our solution are
in nature" in Lokoja.
Chief Omofaiye who explained that the celebration is aimed
at raising awareness to protect the environment and look at various
environmental issues growing by the day, said the year 2020 is a critical year
for nations to demonstrate their commitment to preserving and restoring
biodiversity.
The Commissoner said the emergence of Covid nineteen has clearly
shown that when we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that supports
human life.
He stated that the Ministry of Environment and her boards and agencies has
been at the front line to protect the environment against human abuse and has
been working closely with the Federal Government and various NGOs over the years
to ensure total compliance to environmental policies on climate change,
forestry, waste management and pollution.
Chief Omofaiye stated that the
ministry has carried out several ecological and erosion projects across the
state as well as tree planting projects to increase tree population and has put
measures in place to prevent indiscriminate burning of waste in a bid to
preserve biodiversity.
The Commissioner announced the distribution of over one
thousand eco-friendly cooking stoves to discourage utilization of forest produce
and fossil fuel for energy product at domestic level.
He commended the present
administration for it's support in ensuring the protection of the environment
and urged the people of the state to live with consciousness of protecting the
environment against abuse.
